18 basic knot lessons

18 basic Chinese knots, in your hands.

Follow 18 Chinese knotting demonstrations, from double coin and snake knots to button, cloverleaf and good-luck knots, with images for each lesson.

Choose a lesson below. Each has its own video and step images; use slow playback or jump straight to the movement you want to repeat. Keep a soft practice cord nearby and leave the loops loose until the route is clear.

A simple way to begin Chinese knotting

  1. Prepare a practice cord. Read the cord and tools guide, leave generous ends and keep the first crossings loose.
  2. Practice an open form. Start with the double coin knot and compare its crossings before tightening.
  3. Repeat a small unit. Try the snake knot, then use the bracelet guide to plan a wearable practice project.
  4. Shape a button or a flower. Learn the Chinese button knot or a three-loop Chinese lucky knot, using the video to check both the route and the final dressing.

This is an optional practice sequence. The 18 lessons below keep their original course order.
