Basic knots · Lesson 01 of 18
Double Coin Knot
Build a loose, flat knot from overlapping loops. The first demonstration keeps its crossings open so you can see the two rounded sides; the later sequence shows another face of the same form.

Follow the cord, step by step.

01. Hold the folded cord
Fold the cord into an upright loop. Pinch its base while leaving both long ends free.

02. Make the first side loop
Curve one end across the folded cord to make a round loop beside its base. Keep the upper loop open.

03. Add the adjoining loop
Continue the curve into a second round loop. Hold the crossings in place instead of tightening them.

04. Lace the loose end back through
Bring the loose end back across the open loop arrangement. Match the visible crossings and keep the small openings accessible.

05. Draw the end clear
Pull the threaded end upward and out of the loop arrangement. Spread the cord so the centre remains open.

06. Balance the two rounded sides
Ease slack around the knot until the two side loops sit evenly beneath the upright loop.
Before you move on
- Two rounded sides surround a small central opening.
- The crossings remain in the same order while you adjust the loop sizes.
- Compare the loose structure before tightening; the first demonstration is a layout view.
